Subjects

English
Language is fundamental to all learning and therefore receives a very high priority. Our English curriculum lays a firm emphasis on the development of National Curriculum attainment targets of speaking and listening, reading and writing, including spelling and handwriting. A large amount of our work in English is taught during the daily Literacy Hour and follows the National Literacy Strategy. We aim to provide rich and stimulating experiences for children's written and oral work and aim to develop pleasure in reading as well as the ability to research for information.
Mathematics

Children's understanding of mathematics develops through the study of the National Curriculum attainment targets in number, shape, space and measures, data handling and the use of and application of mathematics. We set out to give children a sound understanding of mathematical principles, methods and skills, which they will be able to use in everyday life. We recognise the importance of helping children develop a positive attitude towards the subject. Mathematics is taught during the Numeracy lesson and our work is based on the National Numeracy Strategy. Much of the work focuses on number, including learning tables, basic computation and mental arithmetic. Children learn through practical work, discussion and investigation.
Science

Science is a core subject ranking equally alongside English and Mathematics. We seek to build upon the natural curiosity children have about the world around them, in order to establish an understanding of scientific knowledge and skills. Science is taught with an emphasis on first hand experience and much of the work is very practical. Following the requirements of the National Curriculum our work in science focuses on:
Life and living processes - human growth, plants and animals;
Materials and their properties - classification, separation and change;
Physical processes - electricity, forces, sound, light, the Earth and beyond.

History

Children learn about the history of our country and the wider world. We aim to develop children's interest in the past and an appreciation of human achievements. In order to bring history alive we use historical artefacts, pictures, maps and copies of original documents. We also take children on visits to places of interest in the locality.

Geography

During their time in school children learn about the geography of the local area, aspects of the British Isles and a locality in a developing area of the world. Where possible children work from direct experience gained on visits or from sources such as maps, photos, documents and videos.

Art

Art is developed not only as a means of expression, but also as a skill in close observation and co-ordination. Children are given the opportunity to learn techniques in collage, three-dimensional work, fabric work and clay. Children are helped to develop good craftsmanship with an emphasis on quality.
Music

Music plays an important part in the life of our school. Our aim is to encourage children to listen to and enjoy all types of music through singing, playing instruments and creative music making. Besides music making in class, children have the opportunity to play an instrument. Children in Years 2, 3 & 4 have the opportunity to start to learn to play the violin. A high proportion of children take advantage of this opportunity.

Technology

In design and technology children have opportunities to develop skills in problem solving and gain knowledge and experience of designing, planning, making and reflecting on their work. Children work individually and in groups, and use a variety of materials including paper, card, fabric and wood. They also learn how to use tools safely.
Information and Communication Technology

It is important that children begin to appreciate the use of computers in society today. We believe computers are an important learning tool, which can greatly contribute to other areas of the curriculum especially in English, mathematics and science. Each class has at least one computer and access to other computers and lap-tops.Each Class has an interactive whiteboard and the school has seven laptops that are available to each class.
